Will The 2-2 Houston Texans Make It To The Postseason?

Will The 2-2 Houston Texans Make It To The Postseason?
Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

Optimism is building in Houston this NFL season. Thanks to the more-than-solid play of rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, the Texans have posted back-to-back convincing wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers. They stand at 2-2, like their three rivals in the AFC South and the Texans playoff chances are alive.

Stroud is putting up numbers that will make him the leading choice for Offensive Rookie of the Year if he can keep it up. He’s completed 62.3% of his passes through four games and thrown for 1,212 yards. He also has six passing touchdowns and no interceptions. These are the types of numbers that will be beneficial to anyone participating in Texas sports betting once it eventually launches.

Season Results of NFL Teams Starting 2-2

We’ll touch on Stroud’s award chances at a later date. For now, we’re looking at Houston's odds of making it to the postseason. Utilizing Champs or Chumps, BetTexas.com looked at how teams ended up the rest of the NFL season after starting their season with a 2-2 record since 2012. There have been 110 teams that have started 2-2 in the last 10 years.

Situation Teams Percentage
Making The Playoffs 44 40.0%
Win Wild Card Round 32 29.1%
Win Divisional Round 14 12.7%
Win Conference Championship 3 2.7%
Win Super Bowl 2 1.8%

Only 40% of the teams that start 2-2 have made the playoffs since 2012. However, since the AFC South has all of its teams at that mark, it means one of them – at least – will make it. While it’s still early, the Texans posting 20- and 24-point wins in consecutive weeks is enough to win over a fan base that’s watched their team struggle to an 11-38-1 record over the previous three seasons.

The Texans' schedule also sets up well for a postseason berth. Their NFC games are against the NFC South teams and the Arizona Cardinals. Besides a rematch against the Jaguars, which is at home on Nov. 26, the toughest games remaining on the schedule appear to be at Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 12, at the New York Jets on Dec. 10 and a Christmas Eve home game versus the Cleveland Browns. All three of those teams right now have either backup quarterbacks playing or a starter who is less than 100%.

Odds On Houston Texans Postseason Chances

Although there are no Texas sportsbook apps, nationally, oddsmakers are warming up to the idea of the Texans in the playoffs. But Stroud and company aren’t among the favorites yet. At DraftKings, oddsmakers have Houston’s odds for making the playoffs at +200, while the odds to miss are -250. The Texans are still the fourth choice to win the division at +475. Those odds are identical at Caesars Sportsbook. At FanDuel, the Texans’ odds to win more than 7.5 games is -122, compared to even odds on the under, and at Fanatics, the Texans ate +500 to win the division.

Sports betting is not legal yet in Texas, but BetTexas.com will provide you with the latest news on the effort to allow sportsbook apps to operate in the Lone Star State and when that happens, we will have the best Texas sportsbook promo codes for you to use.
